Update on UNCG Tuberculosis Event (Health Information)
Guilford County Department of Public Health, the North Carolina TB Control Program and UNCG continue to investigate the tuberculosis (TB) event involving the university’s campus. The initial student (index case) remains hospitalized and is undergoing treatment. NO ONE else on campus has shown evidence of active tuberculosis.
It is only active tuberculosis disease that leads to spread to others. Quarantine of any other student at this time is not medically warranted.
Of hundreds of students and staff tested with a TB skin test, a few of them have had positive tests. All have had a chest x-ray and all x-rays are normal. They are not contagious and do not need to be isolated.
These few students will be offered Rifampin, an antibiotic. This medication will be provided by the Department of Public Health free of charge.
